Translate NetBeans 5.5 and you could win an iPod!

The new NetBeans 5.5 will support the Java EE 5 platform, and the Java Persistence, EJB 3 and JAX-WS 2.0 specifications. Want to learn the new features up close? Help us localize the NetBeans IDE 5.5 in Brazilian Portuguese. Join the Brazil community team that is contributing UI and message translations for the IDE.

How to Join

In order to participate in the contest,

1. Join the translatedfiles project;
2. Visit the Brazil home page;
3. Subscribe to the Brazilian Portuguese mailing list;
4. Get started by visiting the Brazilian Portuguese NB 5.5 Instruction page.

Most importantly, don't forget to introduce yourself to the other members!

Contest Period

The time boundaries of the contest are determined by the official release date of the NetBeans IDE 5.5 Multilingual version (en, ja, zh_CN, pt_BR), which is targeted for 28 November 2006.

The software needs to be translated, reviewed for linguistic correctness, committed to CVS, built and tested.

Start	2 October 2006, or after 5.5 l10nkits received
End	20 November 2006, or when the final Release Candidate Build test is completed Change: RC is released 28 Nov, FCS is 14 Dec. Points can be earned for translation until the translation is completed, around 15 November. Points for translation/review can be submitted until 14 Dec. Testing contest begins 15 Nov and runs until 7 Dec.

How to Earn Points

There are two parts to the contest:

1. translate and quality review the IDE UI and messages [.properties files and .html files (except javahelp)] under all directories.
2. test the localized builds according to a test plan and test suite (provided by Sun).

Translation/Review

Request a module on the mailing list and put your name on the assignment matrix. The modules with the highest priority are those that have been imported from the 5.0 translations. The most experienced contributors can be assigned as reviewers.

Number of words reviewed/4	Check translations against the English original for correctness, accuracy, grammar without doing any build, check or CVS commit.	1000 words per hour
Number of words reviewed	Review as above plus build, check mnemonics, commit to CVS	500 words per hour

Testing

The builds will be tested by a pool of university students to ensure that the translation quality is optimal. The test plan and test suites are being created currently and points will be assigned according to difficulty and time.

Prizes

The top contributors will receive the prizes, in order of highest to lowest points, until all prizes have been awarded. All contributors will receive a NetBeans T-Shirt.

All university students who perform testing according to the documented plan, and file bugs and reports, will also receive a Certificate of Recognition. Certificates will also be available to anyone else upon request.

Netbeans.org will do a feature story about the contest and recognize the awardees.

Rules

• Points are earned after the work is validated by a reviewer
• The person translating a module is responsible for resolving bugs filed against it (may assign to someone else but responsible that it happens).
• For testing activities, a test report must be filled out with bug IDs to earn points. Sun will provide a wiki page for logging test results.
• Translators who worked on files previously translated in 5.0 and imported to 5.5 have the right of first reserve to review or update the same files in 5.5. If the original translator is not interested or available, the file or module is open to any contributor or contest participant.
